Success Coaching FAQ

Each fall, Success Coaches contact eligible students by email, text, and phone. Eligibility may vary each year as the program expands to support more borrowers. If you’re interested in coaching but haven’t heard from a coach, email us at SELFSuccessCoaching.OHE@state.mn.us to get started.

Success Coaching is available once your SELF Loan application is approved. Typically, students have access to a coach for one academic year, though this may vary based on annual eligibility requirements. Your coach will outline your timeframe in their initial outreach email.

You decide how often to meet. Some students prefer monthly video or phone calls, while others opt for check-ins by text or email. It's entirely up to you.

Once connected, you’ll receive your coach’s email, phone number, and a link to check availability and schedule meetings. Coaches are available by video, phone, email, or text. Choose the method that works best for you.

Yes. Switching to a different Success Coach is easy. Email SELFSuccessCoaching.OHE@state.mn.us and we’ll help you make the change. You can also visit meet the coaches to learn more about the team.

Yes. Participating in Success Coaching supports your academic and personal growth, and it also comes with rewards!

• $10 e-Gift Card: Attend your first Welcome to Coaching meeting by phone or video and receive a $10 e-gift card you can use at a variety of retailers through Tango Card.
• Up to $50 in Loan Credits: After your welcome meeting, you can earn a $10 credit toward your SELF Loan balance for each of the next five monthly coaching meetings you attend.

Eligibility and Details:

• Meeting criteria: Each meeting must involve a meaningful interaction that helps you move toward your goals. Your coach will determine if a meeting qualifies.
• Frequency: Credits are awarded for monthly meetings only. Additional sessions in the same month do not qualify for extra credits.
• Loan status: You must have an outstanding SELF Loan balance to earn credits. If your loan is paid in full, credits cannot be refunded. However, you are still eligible to meet with your coach.
• One-time incentive: Incentives are only available for your first six coaching meetings.
• Alternative credit: If an e-gift card cannot be provided, a $10 credit will be applied to your loan balance instead, allowing you to earn up to $60 total.
